About me...

Hi, my name's Iain Brown. I'm a portrait photographer based in Melrose, in the heart of the beautiful Scottish Borders. I'm a graduate of the Royal College of Art, and I've worked in visual design for 30 years. I've been a photographer since my darkroom training days at art college, and photography has always been a part of my life.

I started Effigy because I love all kinds of photography, but most of all, I love portraits. From the drawings of Hans Holbein to the work of Peter Lindbergh, I find images of the human condition to be totally compelling. I'm a huge fan of classic 1960s and 70s photography, and if you haven't guessed already, I really love monochrome pictures!

I aim to capture the inner character of my sitters. To do this, my studio environment is very informal, and you'll feel very involved in the process.I encourage the use of personal props and clothing changes to ensure that your portrait is very personal to you.  The final image often reveals a hidden beauty and strength that is genuinely surprising to the subject.

I shoot with a medium format camera to capture those beautiful skin tones, and I keep a light touch with my post-processing to make sure you remain as natural as possible.

Don't hesitate to get in touch. I think everyone looks amazing and everyone should have their portrait captured!
